Dove’s New Ad Campaign Debunks the “Selfie”

The term “selfie” was coined the word of 2013 by Oxford Dictionaries and the selfie craze has continued into 2014. However, young women often agonize over how they look in their photos – applying lots of makeup, getting creative with angles/poses, using a variety of filters – thereby altering their images significantly before sharing via social media.

Dove’s new ad campaign, Selfie (aka #BeautyIs), was created in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the company’s Campaign for Real Beauty. The seven minute documentary, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, evaluates how social media shapes our perception of beauty. It follows a group of high school girls and their mothers who take self-images that highlight insecurities about the way they look. As it turns out, those very attributes they dislike are what others often find the most beautiful.
